New School Carp Angler
Kyle Jensen graduated from Preston High School this week. He represents the upcoming generation of fly fishers those who are willing to tackle any fish that will eat a fly. Here is a short article he wrote about his secret carp spot. (Editor’s note: Kyle and many close friends have been known to call me Jigidy.)
People often shoot me crazy looks as I walk down the dirt road, fly rod in hand, buff pulled up to my eyes and solid black shades on. I crawl along the bank searching for puffs of mud or a golden tail thrashing out of the water. This is my spot.
As with a lot of carp waters, remnants of the past litter the water. Old farm equipment, tires, barbed wire fences, and just off the bank a crumbling factory. Steam rises from the river as a hot spring feeds into it. This combination of waters makes carp go nuts and presents the fisherman a chance at a monster.
When searching for great carp water around Preston, Idaho people thought I was crazy. Carp are shot around here for fun and not considered a fish to catch on a fly rod, boy are they missing out. After all the crazy looks and ridicule, I finally receive some insane stories of massive numbers of carp feeding frenzies.
I got the location, and loaded up my Ford Taurus. It was love at first sight. Hell raisers jumping all around, 20 or so mudding carp. I knew I’d hit the mother load. The warm water from the hot spring attracts the carp and makes them aggressive towards a fly. If the presentation is right the carp will chase down the fly with fury, all the way to the bank.
This is my spot and attempts at 20 plus pound carp are not uncommon. I have not let anyone in on this location, but this summer I will let my cousin Jigidy try to rip some lips.
