One of the best things about carp is they are widely available. Carp can inhabit virtually any freshwater in the continental United States, that means there are probably carp very near your own home. Be it a lake, river, dirty, clean, and even down right nasty, carp can handle it. Here are a few places that I like to fish near my home in Eastern Idaho.
Blackfoot Reservoir
This is my favorite carp fishing area. Some of the bays (flats) are so full of carp that on any given cast your chances of foul hooking a carp are about as good catching one in the mouth. Explore the beaches by foot or 4x4 but beware the mud, I sank my Dad's Suburban by driving just a little to close to the water. The water here is usually clear enough to allow sight casting, unless the wind turns the lake over. I haven't found a magic fly here yet, but have caught fish on Bead Head Prince's and Wooly Buggers.
“The Diversion”
As it locally known, is a small reservoir located on the blackfoot river just east of the town of Blackfoot. I had one of the best afternoons of fishing I have ever had here, and cant wait to go back and explore it more. The carp here aren’t as big as the carp in Blackfoot Reservoir but they are much more aggressive towards flies. My buddy Drake lives in Salt Lake City but does most of his work in Idaho and fishes this spot every chance he gets since it is only about 10 minutes from Interstate 15.
Snake River
The problem I run into here is I spend all day chasing trophy trout, but the carping opportunities here are endless. Take your pick from carp nymphing in the riffles, or rooting around in the sloughs. Lots of great sight fishing. The one downside to this type of fishing is that a boat is almost mandatory.
Here is a quick list of some other places to go carp fishing that I haven’t had a chance to check out yet.
Bear Lake, Willard Bay (Utah), Flaming Gorge (Utah)
